Photoshop techniques
This lesson we learnt four new effects to put on to an image. This is the original image that i performed the new effects which i learned on.
The first one we learnt was desaturation with a brightness and contrast change.
To make this effect i firstly went to:
Image , then adjustments desaturation and then adjustments brightness adn contrast. shift+ctrl+U
The next effect was the Auto colour/tone/contrast. This the main thing that magazine editors use firstly when they first edit a picture. To do this you go to Image. Auto
tune/contrast/colour.
The last effect i learnt was vingetting. This darkens the outside of the image which leads the eyes focus into the middle. Using an unsharpen toolit creates a much sharper look to the eyes and facial feature.
To do this i used the:
Elipitical market tool
increased the feathering up to 60-90 pixels
create a shape around the face.
then select , inverse , image, adjustment , brightness down.
then filter , shrapen , un sharpen mask.
Shutter speed
Shutter speed is just a little thing that lets in light most camera range from 1/4000s to 30seconds.
Shorter shutter speeds are for freeze framing an image. Long shutter speeds lets in light and creates motion blur.
In a good day light you should use around 1/125 or 1/250 of a second. The lowest shutter speed that doesnt create motion blur is 1/60s.
Anything lower than 1/60 you should use a tripod.
Here are some images that i created using different shutter speeds.

This is my design for my magazine front cover.
For the picture I used a new technique that I found out about light, I used the front light to enhance my models face adding a natural light to the picture without having to use artificial light. When I was taking the picture I wanted an edgy feel to the image , this is why i made my model stand in front of the wall to add a detail and a edge , I also used the boom box as a prop for my model to hold for so that it added a music vibe and a retro look to my music magazine.
I also learned about positions of models and how their appearance can affect the audience of your magazine. I learnt that the look of the model can create a look that the audience idolise and then represent with your magazine. As my magazines audience is a pop music magazine I wanted the colour scheme , bright and fresh. For a girl on the cover I will have pink , black and white colour scheme but if I have a male model I will have the colour scheme blue, black and white so it appeals to a wider audience. The model at eye line is in the top 3rd which is a major rule in taking a picture, if it was under the line of 3rd she would inferior and it if it was over the line of 3rd then she would look overpower full and as if she is looking down on the audience.
For the sell lines , I tried to make them snappy and quirky as that's how I imagined my magazine to be.
To convey this look I used Exclusives for example "Exclusive One Directions' most intimate interview", this makes the magazine more rare and entices the reader to buy the magazine to find out what it is about.
A quote headline also does the same job , it gives just a little snippet of a interview which makes the reader buy it as it is information they may not already know or that other magazines have.An example of this on my cover is " I was close to leaving the group" this makes you wonder who? why? what? and this then signals the reader to buy the magazine to find out.
Ellipsis also is a good device to use with sell lines , it makes sentences shorter, snappier this makes them easier to remember. Another device for sell lines that makes words snappier is Alliteration , this adds a rhythm to the words making them catchy for example Quirky , perky and Beef Jerky. The 'ky' sound adds a pattern and creates a rhythm in the head making it more remember-able.
Another device is a reward headline this shows the benefit of something that the audience can aspire to like a "6 pack in 6 weeks ".
The reason i decided to name my magazine "Rizzle" I decided to call it this as it is short and snappy and can be easily remember , it is also very unique and different to other titles of music magazines.
and the idea for my magazine was mainly for 14 year old plus and for the C1 C2 D category's
it will be for a casual mainstreamer with an audience of 85% girl and 15% males , with more primary colours and a lot of youth orientated slang to make it compatible with my audience.
This image shows the use of a frame ,I have recently learned the rule of framing a picture, this can emphasis the subject and add a vocal point for the viewer. This can also add and effect and can set the scene for the image. Also in the picture the subjects eyeline is just on the third line , after learning that the line of thirds can make the subject look either powerful if is over and helpless , inncoent if under i tried while taking the picture to get the eyeline in the correct position to give the picture a better look.
This images show us the use of lines in a shot, i recently learned that if you use lines, they create energy and they drag the eyes to a focal point . In the picture i tried to achieve the use of lines to lead into a focal point , the light is very sutble and doesnt over power in the shot. Lines in pictures can also be controlled by the camera viewpoint.
This image show the use of tilt on the camera , i have learnt that these shots can create an inferior look to the subject and in this picture i believe it make her look more innocent. The tilt down also creates a sense of power for the reader as they it makes them feel like they are looking down on the subject in the picture.
